For the total weather picture we did not come close to what was forecast, we had only about 30 minutes of rain, the rest of the day has been ice pellets and snow. Heavy on the snow and it is snowing heavily right now. We have close to 10 cm on the ground now, which is great for my gardens so I hope it stays for a bit. The freeze - thaw heavy rain we have been having until now has taken it's toll on the plants. I have pretty much given up hope for the garlic; I am sure it is mush now.
The saturated ground has been playing havoc in the pig yard also. the yard is in freshly cleared land, the soil is beautiful, think forest ground, but it holds a lot of moisture. With all the rain we have had the ground is saturated; when the latest cold snap happened it began freezing and as it froze the ground has been rising; well ice has been pushing up and the 'ground level' has been steadily rising. Gary has had to raise the level of the fence around Killwilly's pen as KW was almost able to walk over the top rail.
I know I will be much happier now that the really cold weather is going for a while. It is just so much harder to do even the simplest chores when the temperature is down around -20. The energy needs of the animals goes through the roof,(we supplement with cracked corn), they need more bedding, things break easier... life is just more complicated.
The good news is Wart has been proving herself to be a great mother, she has kept her piglets well fed and warm through this past week and a half. They have not made it easy on her as they consider it their mission in life to explore every inch of the farm. They are constantly running away from the pen and rooting through the snow and trying to eat ice, their little foot prints turn up in the weirdest places!
So I guess the more things change the more they stay the same,,, as farmers we work this land at the pleasure of Mother Nature. It has always been so; and 25+ years of farming has taught me that you don/t mess with mother nature. She will bite you in the backside every time!
Have a great day everybody...
